CNN —Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said Monday if the Supreme Court does not resolve the issue of presidential immunity “quickly and decisively,” it will have a “profoundly negative impact” on the country. In a New York Times Op-Ed, Cheney argues that, “If delay prevents this Trump case from being tried this year, the public may never hear critical and historic evidence developed before the grand jury, and our system may never hold the man most responsible for Jan. 6 to account.”Her message comes before the high court is set to hear arguments later this month in the blockbuster case over whether Trump may claim immunity from prosecution in the federal election subversion case. Special counsel Jack Smith, who brought the criminal charges, has sought to speed up the proceedings over Trump’s immunity claim so that he can bring the matter to trial as quickly as possible. Trump, however, has told the justices that if they were not willing to grant him full immunity from Smith’s election subversion prosecution, they should send the case back to lower courts for more proceedings – a move that would push off a trial for many months – to determine whether any partial theory of immunity would apply in his case. The alternative route could afford the court’s conservative majority an “off-ramp” that would hamstring the special counsel without taking a blanket view of immunity for former presidents.

CNN —Dozens of US citizens have been evacuated from Haiti on a State Department charter flight as the country is paralyzed by escalating gang violence and political instability that has left once bustling streets vacant and necessities like food and gas scarce. The flight departed Sunday from Cap-Haitien on Haiti’s north coast and landed at the Miami International Airport, the State Department said. More than 30 US citizens were on the flight and government officials are now “assisting with next steps,” a State Department spokesperson said. “The security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the State Department said in a statement Saturday announcing the flight. We recommend you consider the Cap-Haitien flight only if you believe you can reach Cap-Haitien airport safely.

Hankins’ confirmation comes after Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced on Monday that he would resign following weeks of chaos. The former ambassador to Mali and to Guinea has worked for the State Department for nearly four decades. He served in Haiti earlier in his foreign service career.

LATAM called it a “technical event.” Boeing said it’s working to gather more information. Between lawsuits, potential fines and lost business, Boeing could lose billions more dollars from the blowout. In February, pilots on a United Airlines 737 Max reported that the flight controls jammed as the plane landed in Newark. The FAA is allowing the planes to continue flying and Boeing said the problem does not pose an immediate safety risk. And the FAA said Boeing’s safety and quality problems extend beyond its inability to produce paperwork.

The Justice Department review could, the reports note, expose Boeing to broader criminal liability if officials decide Boeing may have violated a controversial legal agreement that was due to expire on January 7, two days after the door plug incident. In the days after the door plug incident on Alaska Airlines flight 1282, an attorney for the families asked the Justice Department to review whether Boeing violated the agreement. Boeing is subject to several other investigations stemming from the door plug incident. The National Transportation Safety Board continues to investigate the door plug incident and recently reported that critical bolts that hold the door plug in place were not installed in Boeing’s factory. The NTSB has yet to determine blame or fault for the door plug incident on the Alaska Air flight.

CNN —Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is in Ukraine to reiterate US support for the country and ratchet up pressure on House Republicans back home to pass a foreign aid bill that includes further assistance for Ukraine and Israel. The visit comes as House Republicans are holding still a foreign aid package that would send further aid to Ukraine and Israel. Schumer told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Friday that during his visit, Zelensky told him that Ukraine will win its war against Russia if Congress passes further aid to the country. If Ukraine loses, Schumer warned, “Our allies will think we will not stick with them anymore. “We must show Putin that he can pay a price, an economic price as well as a political price and a military price.
